Introducing Robotics to Morris School: Inspiring Curiosity and Innovation
Discover how J.P. Jamieson brings the exciting world of robotics to Morris School, inspiring students to explore the possibilities of technology.
At Morris School, we believe in providing our students with innovative learning experiences that prepare them for the future. That's why J.P. Jamieson, our passionate technology teacher, introduced robotics to our curriculum. By exposing students to the Manitoba Robot Games and the creative designs of other teams, J.P. aims to inspire curiosity and foster a love for technology.
During lunchtime, 26 enthusiastic students gather to build and improve their robots. Each robot is carefully crafted with a $50 budget, covering essential components such as the gear box, tires, controller, and motor. Students not only assemble the physical body of the robot but also solder the gearbox to the controller, gaining hands-on experience in engineering and electronics.
With the option to design their robots for speed, power, or a balance between the two, students are encouraged to think critically and make strategic decisions. These robots are then put to the test in an exciting game called Robot Sumo, where two robots compete to push each other out of a ring. The matches are fast-paced, lasting about 20 seconds, and filled with anticipation and cheers from the crowd.
Thanks to the support from Morris Build All Centre, parents, and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) from the University of Manitoba, the robotics club has access to the necessary tools, supplies, and even a soldering demonstration. This collaborative effort ensures that our students have the resources they need to excel in their robotics journey.
By participating in the Manitoba Robot Games, our students not only get a chance to showcase their skills but also learn from other teams and gain exposure to the wider robotics community. The experience of collaborating, problem-solving, and competing in a friendly environment is invaluable and prepares our students for future endeavors.
